Quite agree, Helen. Accessibility, seo, usability, email best practice, use of video, information design, social media... The digital copywriter has to have a full grasp of all these interrelated disciplines as they impact on copy.

I've just signed up to your blog feed and this post has popped up. I completely agree with this point of view too.

Ever since I started freelancing as on online copywriter, I've felt that this should be one of the tasks that I should be able to do (and understand why).

When I'm providing feedback to a potential client, this is one of the things that I always look at (as well as other online-specific copy issues such as accessibility).

Catherine - hear, hear. Tagging is so obviously part of the job of the writer. OK so say I were to offer a client a prime advertising spot - the internet equivalent of a TV advert slot - and this listing is free. All they have to pay for is the copywriter's time. A no-brainer, surely?

Well that's how important the meta description tag and the title tag are. I've had clients who've configured their CMSes so that the page title tag and the page heading (h1 tag) are the same wording as the navigation label leading to that page. Pure madness.
I think of the page title tag and the meta tag as being a headline and a standfirst.
