Attack of the festive subject lines
All we want for Christmas is a little creativity…
With Christmas a few weeks away, there’s only one thing more annoying than Mariah Carey played on a loop in the shops, and that’s Christmas marketing emails. A few have already started to arrive, and over the next few weeks I’ll bet your inbox will be busier than Father C himself on the big night.
With such a deluge, how do you decide which emails to open? The subject line is so important, but retailers just can’t seem to get it right.
A personal favourite of mine so far is “Christmas all wrapped up”. If all my friends and family were hoping to find a fishing rod under the tree and looking forward to tucking into a plate of maggots come 25th December, then this particular angling retailer would have hit the nail on the head with that subject line. As it is, I might have to visit a few other online retailers to get absolutely everything ticked off my “to buy” list. Call me a Scrooge, but subject lines like that are cheesy and, dare I say it, lazy.
I’m keeping a tally of how many brands claim to have Christmas all wrapped up. I wonder if they realise that subject line’s already been thought of and won’t help them stand out in a crowded Christmas inbox.
Any best or worst festive subject lines? Let us know in the comments.
